Find the perfect lipstick for your skin tone!

I love experimenting with color. Not just in my clothes and my hair but also my makeup, but not every color looks great. Well here are some easy tips to help you narrow down the vast selection of colors out there for your lipstick. This is just a guideline and even in each category there are dozens of variations for you to try out and find the perfect colors for you!
Here are the most important things to consider.

  • Consider neutral tones and subtle colors for every day casual makeup, work (office) as well as weekend afternoons.
  • The glamorous red is the ultimate color that says "Let's go out!" and is perfect for all skin tones when it comes to dressing up! (Just be careful! Red is the trickiest color to apply correctly so it looks natural and sexy at the same time, and it stays on your lips, not your chin or your teeth. I'll be writing soon more about correct applications!
  • Warm weather, during late spring, summer and early fall, calls for sheer textures and quiet pinks.
  • Plum and dark wines, as well as creamy tones are ideal for winter.
  • FAIR SKIN: dramatic reds with a bluish tint, warm pinks and peachy glowing hues.
  • OLIVE SKIN: warm tones, light browns or dark-brownish reds; avoid orange-reds and pinks!
  • DARK SKIN: stay away from orange-reds and pinks; choose instead a flattering deep reddish-brown or a deep red with purple or blue tones.
I'll be adding some more recommendations for specific lipsticks later, but here are my top 3 lipstick brands - Avon, Clinique, and Mac.

As always I appreciate comments and feedback! What's your favorite color? Send me a picture of you wearing it and I will randomly select 1 winner to receive their favorite shade lipstick! Email pictures to stylebytatjana@gmail.com with the subject line "LIPS." All pictures will be feature on this blog and the winner will be announced 3/1/2014!

Review - Mega Effects Mascara from Avon

Ok so first off I have to say (again), I am an Avon rep, but I will not hold back on the criticism here.
When we had our meeting where the new Mega Effects Mascara was introduced to us, we were told that this is a very different mascara. Well they were right. The brush is unlike anything you have ever seen. That said, it does take a bit to get used to it. Our district manager said that this is probably something for our younger clients only since the application is so different from regular mascara that the older generations might not be able to learn the new technique after applying mascara the traditional way for years. However, I have to disagree. I think women are pretty handy when it comes to learning new things, so I think anybody can learn how to handle the new applicator. If you are wondering why I am spending so much time on the "new" brush, well here is a picture so you'll understand what I am talking about.

This video shows it a bit better and also explains how to handle the brush a bit, however they skip over the actual application quite fast. Watch it and then read on.

Ok, so one thing I really want to repeat that was mentioned, brush upward. If you try to come at your eye straight on, you will poke yourself. I am wearing contact lenses so the first time I tried it, I had more mascara on my lenses than on my lashes. However, a little bit of practice and I figured it out. The important thing is to angle the brush (which is a nice innovation that no other brush has!) and come from underneath your eye and brush up along your lashes.

Because the bristles are all around the brush you can just angle it to the other side, flip and apply to the other side without dipping it back into the base. And when you straighten out the brush you can hold it sideways and reach those small lashes in the corners pretty easily.

Ok, so much for the application. Again, a bit difficult in the beginning, so I would definitely recommend practicing on a weekend when you are hanging out at home, not before work or school and not before going out at night.

So how are the results? Pretty amazing! I have to say, I have really light lashes and this mascara got them all and in only one application I had a great day look for my eyes. Not too little, not too much. Most other mascaras, I have to apply at least twice or three times to get a nice even cover. For at night, I apply two or three coats and it makes my lashes look so bit that I have been actually asked if I was wearing false lashes. Pretty cool result.

I have heard some people say it smears and flakes, however, I have not experienced that. I would recommend really cleaning your lashes before you apply it, just to make sure there is nothing else underneath, like natural oils or previous layers of other mascara. For me this is actually one of the few mascaras that doesn't flake and smear and I can wear it all day without looking like a raccoon.
That said, they don't have it in waterproof (yet). I really do hope they come out with a waterproof version, so any potential smearing can be eliminated.

One thing, I am a bit upset about is that it seems to dry up a bit quicker in the container than other mascaras. Maybe it is the container itself that is sometimes a bit tricky to close. I have had the cap fall off a few times. It seems that if you don't straighten the brush handle after application perfectly and then put the cap on until it clicks into place, it won't stay on if you put it in your purse or make-up case. Don't worry, it won't spill because the brush is pretty firm in the base but I think the little rubber sides still let some air in that tends to dry out the mascara. So make sure to click it in place when you close the cap! I am going to try it with a new one and make sure to always close it right (I'll post my update after a few more weeks!).

So overall, I would give this a 4 out of 5 stars rating. Try it! The application is weird and something to get used to, the coverage is fantastic, the cap a bit tricky. Oh, and with the price of $10 it is pretty average and affordable, so it's definitely worth giving it a try!

You can order it HERE and just look for the Mega Effects Mascara.

Once you tried it, I would love to hear what you think! And if you have any questions or problems or suggestions, you can always message me or comment below!

Style or No Style - That is the Real Question!

So this is it. My very first blog post. Now let me tell you why I am doing this. I have an opinion and so far I have only shared it with a few people if they asked me specifically. I have never shared it with the whole world. I am not someone who tweets when I go to bed or posts a picture of what I am eating on instagram or facebook. That is a bunch of crap. (Oh and how I love those posts about how someone's baby or dog craps! Really worth sharing with the entire world!). I am honest about what I think and if you don't like it, stop reading. I have no intention of offending anyone, but I am passionate about what I have to say and that includes the good, the bad and the ugly.

I am going to be writing a blog about style (not just clothes, but also beauty, and in general "life style"). No I am not a fashion junkie running after every trend out there. What celebrities wear or don't is irrelevant to me. That's not style to me. That's fashion or a current trend. Style is something timeless and personal, so I am really flattered when people tell me that I have a great sense of style.
It takes a while to find you personal style and I don't think it is something that can be judged. Yes, I said it, you can't be judged on your personal sense of style! But then why write about style in the first place? Well I didn't say that you can't judge at all. I can't stand people who need to run after every trend in every fashion magazine and buy every bag Kim Kardashian has in People magazine and every mascara or eyeshadow a celebrity endorses. That's not style, that's pathetic. These people don't have style, they only try to imitate others.

Style is greater than fashion. Finding your personal style is so much more than a piece of clothing and a lipstick. It's about everything you do every day of your life. And don't get me wrong, I have days that I am not the most stylish person, I run around in sweatpants of PJs at home, but my personal style is not to ever leave the house in those. But that's just me. My personal aesthetic. And I am not writing this blog to push my style onto others. It is simply to share my opinion about clothes, accessories, makeup, hair and beauty products as well as my lifestyle in general. I encourage people to find their own style and post comments about what they think and feel.

My personal style includes a combination of casual comfortable, edgy chic and classy upscale dressy. Hopefully you'll get to know me a bit and understand what I mean. I am a vegetarian (technically pescetarian, I eat fish), but I am not obsessed with it and I am not offended when someone next to me eats a steak. I enjoying living a balanced lifestyle, I am not a party girl, but I enjoy going to a bar every once in a while or rock out at a concert. I love the comforts of sitting at home and enjoying a movie on my couch, but I also love camping and hiking and watching meteor showers in the middle of the night sitting on a rock and freezing my butt off. I have passion for what I do (I am working in the entertainment industry in LA as an actress, model and producer) and I am loyal to my friends, but don't mess with me and stab me in the back, cause I will not take it! I will try to share as many pictures as I can but I promise I won't overdo it!

Oh and one more thing. Yes, I am an Avon Independent Sales Representative. And sure, I would love it if everyone would buy stuff from me, but I won't hold it against anyone if they don't. And when I post my opinions and review of beauty products, trust me, if I don't like a product that I got from Avon, I will say it (or write it!). And I am not going to review only Avon products but whatever I can get my hands on.

So now that you have read my very first blog, I hope you enjoyed it and you will come back for more. If you read this far and you didn't like what you read (not sure why you read the whole thing anyway), well then, I guess you won't come back for more (good luck and good bye).

Now it's your turn! Have you found your personal style? If yes, what is it?
